It is now the time to ensure that every student has a digital device.
I say this for 3 main reasons.
- The quality and amount of digital content in education is exploding.
- Now the Digital and mobile devices are proliferating and are available at much lower costs.
- Online interactive environments are becoming easier to use and foster collaboration.
It is increasingly becoming a necessity for the students to have a digital device with them in class, just like they would have their binder, textbook, or pencil box.The digital device helps them to maintain their portfolio, access news and information when they need it, get their grades, and manage their learning life. Many schools and districts are now trying to figure out how they can leverage, rather than disallow, student-owned devices. The concept of BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) is now picking up.
However, this strategy, for sure, requires careful attention to policy development and planning. Ofcourse, this BYOD concept could bring in certain tablet inequalities for the students in the classroom (like performance of tablets, high end vs low end configuration tablets). However this could be easily circumvented by proper planning and finalization of all the activities that would involve a device. These activities would then dictate the basic configuration needs that every device should comply, irrespective of its brand (for example., If the activity list includes using animations or videos then the minimum configuration of the tablet should be higher). Also a key aspect in this regard is to wisely choose such educational Apps and tools that focus on catering to all platforms to ensure a seamless classroom environment.
